The combined sound of the award-winning Sirens (Donna Creighton and Jo-Ann
Lawton) captures audiences. Unlike sirens of folklore, however, Canada’s Sirens
deliver story songs with rare emotional complexity and a genre-blending style
that is as unexpected as their vocal harmonies. They’ve been called “startling”,
“beautiful” and “nothing less than Magic”. With evocative songs, bang-on vocals,
down-home humor and three adventurous musical minds in the mix, Sirens’
performances are moving, tickling the funny bone one moment, drawing tears the
next. Based in London, Ontario, Sirens have built a fan base in southern and
northern Ontario with journeys west and into the United States over the past
seven years.

Sat. June 4th 9pm DesChamps Band

The DesChamps Band was formed shortly after the passing of legendary country
musician, Champ Hood. Uncle Walt's Band, a group native to Spartanburg, SC,
boasted Champ as member, alongside Walter Hyatt and David Ball. Champ's nephew,
Marshall Hood, started the band in March of 2002 as a tribute to Uncle Walt's
Band. With the addition of Rob Teter and Jeff Brown, the band began playing
small scale shows and private parties around Spartanburg, South Carolina. A year
later, looking for a more intimate and tighter vocal section, the band added
violinist, Matt Parks. Although the group was created in tribute to Uncle
Walt's, you can expect an extensive set of original songs.
The DesChamps Band currently tours regionally, and is a local phenomenon for its
truly original sound, including exceptional instrumental and vocal work, rare
for musicians of such a young age. Their truly original sound is being hailed
as: "Hard-to-pin-down alt-country, with infusions of Jazz, Bluegrass, and
swing." Texas performer Lyle Lovett is quoted saying: "It is such a comfort to
see (Champ and Walter) live on through these young musicians"
The Band just recently released its 6 song demo, produced by Marshall Tucker
Band alumnus and accomplished producer, Paul T. Riddle. The Band has also had
the honor of playing with performers such as Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder,
Junior Brown, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Del McCouty Band, and David Ball.

Balagula Theatre Season Opener
A collection of
three darkly brilliant one-act plays forms a trio of unforgettable personal
accounts.
In MEDEA REDUX, a woman tells of her complex and ultimately tragic relationship

In IPHIGENIA IN OREM, a Utah businessman confides in a stranger in a Las Vegas
hotel room, confessing a most chilling crime.
And in A GAGGLE OF SAINTS, a young Mormon couple separately recounts the violent
events of an anniversary weekend in New York City. All three are unblinking
portraits of the complexities of evil in everyday life, exhibiting LaBute's
signature raw lyrical intensity.
Balagula Theatre and Party Players present Bash by Neil Labute directed by

Think Ripe Queen Anne Cherries, picked at their prime with a presentation on
antique white bone china bowls, fresh cream and sugar in silver decanters on the
side, served after dinner out on the veranda just as the sun is setting. Sound
appetizing? Then you'll be drooling at the sound of the Red State Ramblers, a
Mountain Music Ensemble with roots in the deep hollers, montains and farmlands
of our native Kentucky. This is the official string band of the University of
Kentucky, and rightfully so.

Fiddling champ/musical whiz kid Nikos Pappas is known far and wide for his
virtuosic interpretations of Kentucky fiddle tunes. And if that wasn't enough
musical culture to pucker your traditional music taste buds, the other members
of the band are also pickers with some prize winning country chops. The sweet
sugar filling of this musical cherry pie is composed of Will Bacon on old-time
clawhammer banjo, Jeff Keith hammerin and pullin out some lightning guitar licks
and Kevin Kehrberg slappin down on bass fiddle.
Natasha will be cooking up some good mountain and country favorites for the
occasion so come on down for a foot tappin' good time.

Based
in Lexington, Kentucky, Alma Gitana (Gypsy Soul) performs the music of some of
Spain's most progressive Flamenco fusion groups including: Navajita Plateá;
Mártires del Compás; Ojos de Brujo; and Ketama. An occasional Gypsy Kings song
rounds out the mix. With a line up of two flamenco guitars, cajón (box drum),
bass, percussion and vocals, Alma Gitana's performances invoke the spirit and
sound of Andalucia. In response to experiencing the ensemble's premiere
performance, an audience member from Cadiz wrote, "Gitanos Americanos, Gracias

Fri. & Sat. July 15th & 16th 9pm The DesChamps Band

Fri. Sept. 2nd @ 9pm Billy Blues
Billyblues began on a back porch in backwater Kentucky. Mark and Colin were
thumb-picking Mississippi John Hurt songs when Mike came by with a bottle of Jim
Beam and a suitcase full of harmonicas--and the band was born. The sound they
developed over the next six years and two albums took inspiration from all
styles of blues--Delta to Chicago--but especially from mountain-South
traditional music, which is bluesier than the people who make categories usually
notice. Songs by the likes of Blind Blake, Muddy Waters, and Jimmy Reed are an
important part of what they do, but they have become known for the dark wit and
weathered three-part harmonies of their originals. In the words of one reviewer,
"Tom Waits Meets the Soggy Bottom Boys."

Some
Things You Need to Know Before the World Ends
(A Final Evening with the
Illuminati)
By Levi Lee and Larry Larson Balagula Theatre presents Some Things You Need to
Know Before the World Ends (A Final Evening with the Illuminati). The play
explores issues of blind faith and organized religion through the characters of
Reverend Eddie and Brother Lawrence, survivors of an apocalypse who have taken
shelter in their church. As Reverend Eddie prepares his final sermon, his grip
on reality and his faith are challenged by the unseen presence of the
Illuminati.

($7-$12) In accordance with our mission to provoke thought and communication
about social and cultural issues through community theatre we have chosen to
produce a play by Larry Larson and Levi Lee, Some Things you Need to Know Before
the World Ends (A Final Evening with the Illuminati) as a catalyst for public
discussion of issues regarding blind faith and organized religion. We feel that
this play, despite the irreverence toward some religious forms and norms,
advocates sincerity of personal faith. We do not see it as a satirical attack on
Christian teachings and beliefs but rather on some of the applications in
contemporary society. We certainly are not interested in creating a yet another
divisive controversy, but would like to spark an in-depth discussion about faith
in the face of death and destruction, issues of living with faith in a
pluralistic society, the ever changing role of a spiritual leaders in the modern
world, and about the way we can deal with modern day fanatics and
fundamentalists of any sort whose beliefs and actions seem to tear our world
more and more apart. In other words, what we can do to avoid the very kind of
the Apocalypse surrounding the characters of this play. This is why we feel
compelled to invite the students of theology and members of progressive area
churches to enjoy this production and stay afterward for discussion with the
actors and other members of the theatre community.

Thurs. Dec. 22nd @ 9pm The DesChamps Band

The DesChamps Band was formed shortly after the passing of legendary country
musician, Champ Hood a member of Uncle Walt's Band. Champ's nephew,
Marshall Hood, started the band as a tribute to Uncle Walt's Band. Although the
group was created in tribute, you can expect an extensive set of original songs.
The DesChamps Band currently tours regionally, and is a local phenomenon for its
truly original sound, including exceptional instrumental and vocal work, rare
for musicians of such a young age. Their truly original sound is being hailed
as: "Hard-to-pin-down alt-country, with infusions of Jazz, Bluegrass, and
swing."

Fri. Dec. 23rd @ 9pm Ben Lacy
 |
Thousands of awestruck audience members have watched him move
effortlessly from Led Zepplin...to Stevie Wonder...to Van Morrison,
not just playing the guitar parts...playing all the parts, at the
same time. Snapping and slapping nasty bass grooves, stabbing
inspired chord voicings, thumping staccato drumbeats and playing
sassy solo lines... all simultaneously. But this isn’t just a
circus trick. It’s pure inspiration crafted with superhuman
precision and Mojo to burn. $5 cover |
