Tuesday July 15th @ 9PM Gretle

GretleThis Boston-based group, led by songwriter and mouthpiece Reva Williams, bring lyrics of disappointment and denial, tales of death and fatalistic flippancy all shimmer with precision and intensity, while the melodies and harmonies, the arrangements and energy of their live shows suggest that something better might be possible. With a five and dime store’s approach to off-beat instrumentation (typewriter, bucket, and saw to name a few), the sound is eclectic, borrowing from folk music, alt country, punk, the blues, and domestic life. Whether through the ecstatic heights of an operatic line, the muddy optimism of a gospel choir, or the feel-good sneaking sorrow of a country tune, Gretel’s palette is broad. Each song sits within its own well-deserved world, refreshingly interpreted and never underexposed.

Tuesday July 22nd @ 9PM Chris Pureka
Chris Pureka plays like she enters a room: with low, deliberate airs, quietly demanding respect. One stark, solo acoustic guitar builds into layered swan songs and raspy serenades that resonate with unassuming depth and candor. Comparisons flow easily: some recognize the poetry and grit of a young Bruce Springsteen or a troubled Ryan Adams. Others see Nashville shining on the horizon for this indie-acoustic songstress whose simple, yet heartfelt and vulnerable delivery often resembles shades of female greats like Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch or Mary Gauthier. Whatever the reference point, one thing remains certain: on her newest release, Chris Pureka has taken the unfettered, heart-on-your-sleeve approach she is known for and has delved even deeper into her calling to deliver a newly promising and original collection of songs. The progression is natural, if not subtle; and the results are impressive. For more information visit www.myspace.com/chrispureka or chrispureka.com

Wednesday August 6th @ 9pm Nathaniel Seer
Nathaniel SeerNathaniel Seer sings songs that cannot be wrangled by archetypes, with a voice that commands the power to lull as equally as it does to awaken. His songs exist in transit from mouth to ear, and finally at rest somewhere deep within the listener, unwavering.

Seer was born to the howls and whines of a gospel choir, grew into an adolescence of precocious, sex obsessed indie rock, and in the end died an old man beneath the rumblings of a symphony orchestra. Upon his resurrection, Seer found that he had returned from the dead cursed with the hunger of Whitman, the thirst of Emerson, and the lust of Kerouac.

Wednesday August 13th @ 9PM Tagawa Trio
A night with Ko Tagawa...seems at first, like a traditional night of Jazz, of beautiful standards, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Rogers and Hart... soft...evocative... a gentle Journey back to a simpler time... unless you've been there before, you're unaware... Old hands catch it early... that when he starts to close his eyes, the transformation begins, and you realize that subtly, so subtly that you didn't notice, That the terrain has changed , that the melody with all its familiarity is gone, and the gentle pianist has taken you to a place you've never been. Thursday August 21st @ 8PM

Written by William Luse, Starring Ed Desiato, Ryan Case
Directed by Clay Watkins

For one special performance at the Kentucky Theatre, Ed Desiato once again becomes Barrymore, the master of one character biographies for the stage. The play begins with a stunning entrance onto a stage that the 60 year old legendary actor has rented to prepare for a comeback performance of Richard III. Barrymore jokes with the audience, spars with an offstage prompter, reminisces about better times and does delicious imitations of his siblings Lionel and Ethel.

Her songwriting has matured into a style that allows her to take whatever life has to offer and share the experience with others. Although her music exudes a folk flavor, it cannot be so narrowly defined.
