TIPS FROM BEHIND THE COUNTER
For future newsletters my intention is to use this column as an
opportunity to ...well... talk back. For the most part the role I play
behind the real counter in a retail business is one of service and most
shoppers are on a mission of sorts and I interact along those lines. In
this capacity I try to stick to the script, not always successful, but
even if I don't say what I really think you can rest assured that I'm
thinking something! Since it's holiday shopping time again and I have
participated in the frenzy and witnessed not only those jubilant
discoveries of finding the right gift, but also the frustration of running
out of time or money, I feel compelled to offer a little advice . Common
sense would tell you to make a budget and a list.. But here is where I'd
like to step in with a little twist to the list.
Instead of listing people alphabetically or at random as they come to
mind, I suggest a highly organized list that is arranged in order of
priority: The most important people on top, distant relatives at the
bottom. Here's the twist: START FROM THE BOTTOM. Go shop in a highly
organized way, from the bottom of the list up The less money you spend at
the bottom, the more you have left for your top priorities. Also, do not
assign a dollar value to the people on your list. Remember most gifts are
not about gratification. They are our way to tell each other, "I
remember you, I love you, and I care." Gift giving is about spending
our time, thought, and warmth… Money? Well, a little hand made Indian
Noah bell, when put on a red ribbon with a piece of greenery attached to
it, can go a long way ($1.50 for the bell and a few cents for the ribbon).
A piece of exotic Chinese soap, when boxed and wrapped, may be a sweet
gift for someone who has no more space for figurines on their shelves
($2.00-$2.50). A pair of simple chop sticks for someone who loves sushi
($2.00)… I can go on and on… Just don't forget to take the price tags
off! The more creative and playful you are with those at the bottom of the
list, the more money you'll have to spend on those closest to you. When
you get to the top, with most of your shopping behind you, you'll be able
to relax and enjoy those few special gifts that matter the most.
I'm not kidding! Make the list and start at the bottom. Gift shopping
should not be a chore, we do those all year long…but rather a game of
treasure hunting. where finding and choosing are as enjoyable as the
moment of giving. |
