Rainsticks
If rainsticks could really bring rain, our store would flood
occasionally, especially when men shop. I love to see the really big macho man
standing there, still, enchanted by the sound of tiny pebbles slowly flowing
inside the hollow cactus trunk.
Our rainsticks are made by artisans in Chile from the Capado cactus
plant. These cactus are plentiful in the Atacama desert of Northern Chile
where the rainsticks are used in ceremonies to bring-- you guessed it---RAIN.
the Capado cactus lives to be 60 to 70 years old, when they die and dry out the
wood skeleton called the normata is harvested, hollowed out and filled with
small volcanic ash pebbles. Small nails are driven through the trunk in a
spiral formation creating the unique sound of water as the pebbles fall slowly
when the cactus is turned upside down.
