Rice Paper

Once upon a time there were no big smoky smelly factories making paper of all kinds. Paper was made by hand through a very tedious process in small shops and was very valuable. And some of it still is.  The arts had to adjust to the quality and character of the tools made by hand. This adjustment shaped the art not to simply reflect life but to reveal its soul, its essence in its very peculiar way.

Our paper comes from Xueng district in the Anhui province of China. The writing on the roll translates "High Class Chinese Painting Paper". It is made by hand in small quantities and completely acid free. Though known as "rice paper" most of the Chinese paper is actually made of bamboo pulp and is an essential ingredient in the creation of the magic of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and ink painting.
