Russian Lacquer Box from the Kholui Village in Russia depicting the legendary hero Svyatogor The master miniature painters from Kholui choose subjects from the poems and stories of classical literature, fairy tales and bylinas. Attention is paid to landscaping around the village of Kholii and the Teza river that runs through the town flooding in the spring. During the spring when the waters reach the towns edge, boats are used to get around. These scenes are common with the Kholui painters. This lacquer art work is one of the finer examples of such miniature painting.
